Brief Summary of the 1916 Rising

On Easter Monday April 24th 1916, a group of Irish nationalists proclaimed the establishment of the Irish Republic. This document signed by the seven signatories declared the right of the ownership of Ireland to all Irishmen and Irishwomen. It also guaranteed religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all citizens.

The nationalists staged a rebellion against the British government in Ireland. The rebels seized prominent buildings in Dublin and clashed with British troops. Within a week, the rebellion had been suppressed and more than 2,000 people were dead or injured.

The leaders of the rebellion soon were executed. The executed leaders soon became martyrs and swayed the opinion of the Irish people. This lead to the War of Independence and to the signing of the Anglo Irish Treaty in 1921, which ended British rule in Ireland.
